die australische band pleasure symbols tritt 2019 physisch und stilistisch mit der bevorstehenden veröffentlichung ihrer ersten vollständigen platte closer and closer apart in eine neue phase ein. drei jahre sind seit der veröffentlichung ihres debüt vergangen. zusammen mit seinem musikerkollegen steven schnorrer begann das duo den vorstoß zu einem post-punk-sound der 80er jahre mit einem pop-noir-touch. die entscheidung das album selbst aufzunehmen und zu produzieren gab ihnen die freiheit sich zeit zu nehmen um zu wachsen und in eine neue richtung als songwriting-duo zu gehen.

recorded at the age of 14, in 1956, under the direction of her father, reverend c. l. franklin, these gospel recordings of a teenaged aretha franklin are not just a sign of the brilliance to come, they are a force unto themselves. at this time aretha was performing in her father’s church, new bethel, in detroit, and traveling with her father’s »gospel caravan« tours, performing with the likes of sam cooke & the soul stirrers. like so many of the soul and r&b stars of the 50s and 60s, aretha started out in the church and it was there that she made some of her most powerful and transcendental music.

strut presents the brand new album an angel fell from cosmic jazz travellers the pyramids, led by saxophonist idris ackamoor. produced by malcolm catto of the heliocentrics, the album was recorded during an intense week at quatermass studios in london. some of the many highlights include the poignant title track depicting a fallen angel in purgatory, outrage and grief on the powerful, hard hitting soliloquy for michael brown and the lilting, beautiful album closer, sunset. the pyramids originally came together in 1972 at antioch college, yellow springs, ohio where teachers included renowned pianist, cecil taylor. after forming in paris and embarking on a cultural odyssey across africa, the group recorded three independent albums,‘lalibela (1973), king of kings (1974) and birth/speed/merging (1976) and became renowned for their striking live shows, mixing percussive, spiritual and space-age jazz with performance theatre and dance.

okzharp says ‘most of the music came out of headphone moments in hotel rooms, planes and airports in the brief periods of time that we spent together, mainly on tour, in paris and later vienna’, a city manthe describes as a ‘beautiful dream place’.

after the success of closer to freedom in 2014, chicago legend dj jes returns to tardis records with the between the lines ep, featuring two lost tracks from his personal archives and a brand new offering. opener æno foolingÆ is reduced to the bare essentials until an elegant snatch of piano and spoken word sample break it down further, when the track kicks back in with a vengeance everyone in the room will know all about it, but it remains subtle enough to work the day after as well. on the flip, æbetween the linesÆ is tougher and dubbier and will do some serious peak-time damage, whilst new track lost is a cut-up banger for the floor and a perfect dj tool. all tracks have been meticulously edited and rearranged by label owners eli verveine and oscar schubaq in order to extend the grooves and maximise dance floor impact.
